Colin Verner lives and works in Kuaotunu on the Coromandel Peninsula. He studied Fine Arts at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design in Auckland, and at Montclair State University, in New Jersey, USA. He travelled for eight years and has exhibited in New Zealand, The USA, and South Korea.
‘As a creative starting point for my art I use several techniques designed to access what (in Western civilisation) is referred to as the unconscious mind. Primarily I use automatic drawing or writing to generate images and ideas. I then juxtapose this material in contemplative and imaginative ways, until I realise something I wish to physically craft.
As well as being an expression of my own unconscious, these objects represent an exploration of the history, ideas, and narratives relating to this subject.’
