Visited the Auckland Art Gallery Toi O Tamaki and viewed several of the exhibitions but found the artworks of Rita Angus the most memorable.  Colin McCahon’s large pieces also worth a long look but the more contemporary works don’t hold my interest personally.  The Maori Portraits: Gottfried Lindauer’s New Zealand is an amazing collection of detailed portraits.

And take time to visit the interactive…….

“From Pillars to Posts: Project Another Country is the latest participatory artwork commissioned for the Gallery’s Todd Foundation Creative Learning Centre.

Dreamed up by artists and husband-and-wife team Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan, the installation explores community, family, relocation and homemaking, and is part of an ongoing series of site-specific projects by the artists that use art making to prompt conversations about what makes a home.

Using recycled cardboard boxes to create a model city, the artists invite collaboration by providing materials for Gallery visitors to produce their own small cardboard houses, which will be amassed into the installation.”

A visit recently to Christchurch Art Gallery was a delight in two ways.

Firstly, the exhibitions;  Tony de Lautour distinctive paintings and sculptures, 19th and 20th Century New Zealand Art, the weight of sunlight and more.  I absolutely loved the wall which included Doris Lusk, and other cubist style artworks.  Always interesting to discuss works less known with some of the art gallery attendants to gain knowledge and appreciation of different works.

Secondly, the Library.  I have a collection of Frank Gross works and as he settled in Christchurch in 1954 and exhibited there I found some useful information at the Gallery’s library and discussed with some of the art consultants and researchers there on the day as well as finding what works the gallery held of this artist (one work ‘Tamed River’).  A great resource.

These were interesting works which tugged at your perception of depth and reality.  This is a delightful gallery worth visiting.

Always good to view new artists and interesting pieces of work.

Pippa has a delightful artist studio  Wildflower Art Studio in Kuaotunu Village in the Coromandel.  I met Pippa at the opening exhibition evening of the Mercury Bay Art Escape weekend which is the first two weekends in March.  She is outgoing and interesting to talk to and discuss art with.  Her lovely and well priced watercolour was one of the first to sell at the event.

I then visited her studio over the weekend and you can see her delightful works on Facebook-Wildflower Art Studio or www.pippa.co.nz/

Reina’s studio in Tairua was a lovely place to visit during the Mercury Bay Art Escape as she has vibrant, colourful artworks, cards, calendars and gifts.  Her work is a slight blend of culture with what I would call Coromandel art colours – bright blues, reds and greens.  Her work is a breath of fresh air and a wonderful place to pick up gifts if not for yourself.  Visit www.reinacottier.com  to check it out.

ArtsPost Galleries & Shop exhibited some highly talented ceramic artworks in February 2018 of which the following artists were of particular interest:

Robin Ranga – They Rose to Celebrate Liberty – From Dust whence The Came.  This was a compelling piece that stopped you in your walk and held your attention. Her sculptures and paintings with people/children’s backs are very well thought out.

After viewing her website http://www.robinranga.nz/   I can tell I will want one of her pieces in my collection one day.

The Bobby Darin Musical was possibly the best musical I’ve been to.  It was a great story that moved along at a good pace with interesting information, a lot of the songs you recognise sung by incredible singers.  Songs such as Mack the Knife, Dream Lover, Splish Splash beautifully sung by David Campbell as Bobby Darin.  WIth Marina Prior as Bobby’s wife Sandra Dee.

This was an artful telling of the songwriter’s life including his acting, his record deals and family revelations.  I enjoyed this very very much at the Art Centre in Melbourne.

The Art of Dr. Seuss presented by Harvey Galleries was in the Block Arcade in Melbourne providing a couple of rooms of delightful limited edition prints and artwork which children (and I suspect many adults like myself) to gaze for long extended moments during the heat of a Melbourne summer.  The prints were full of fun and colour and just what you would expect of a Dr. Seuss exhibition.  I overheard that this may be coming to New Zealand sometime – a delight to go and see.
